
GAMABA AWARD
"Gawad sa manililikha ng bayan" was created to recognize and honor the Philippines finest traditional artists and preserve their skills by passing them on to others; it fosters national pride and appreciation for the cultural heritage works by these artists
National Commission for culture and the arts
The award is handled by the National Commission for culture and the arts (NCCA). They are tasked under RA 7355 to search for the finest traditional artists in the country. In addition, they are also tasked with launching programs or actions that seeks to transfer the skills to other artists and undertake measures to promote appreciation to our culture.

Criteria for a GAMABA awardee
- They must possess a mastery over tools and material needed for the traditional art and make it of extraordinary quality
- Consistent quality of art over a period of time
- The traditional or folk art the candidate specializes in should be at least 50 years old
- Must be of good standing and character and inspire admiration around the country
- Must be willing to take on apprentices or transfer skills to other members of the community, for which the community is nationally known
- If the candidate is unable to transfer skills or teach due to old age, considerations will apply so long as the prior requirements were met.
A panel of experts on traditional art and folk art would assist the executive council of GAMABA to ensure a fair selection
